"Hollands Heyll'€™ en Rampen," Dionisius du Toict, 1686 -- Antique
This volume is entitled "Hollands Heyll'€™ en Rampen ofte Desselfs Gelukk’ en ongelukken, tegens malkanderend vertoond, in twee deelen waar van het eerste deel vervat" by Dionisius du Toict (Amsterdam: By Jan t'€™en Hoorn, 1686). Bound in full vellum, and with faded lettering to the spine, this volume is adorned with an engraved frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe, an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque, painter, sculptor, engraver and caricaturist (Wikipedia). The text features decorative engraved headpieces, tailpieces, and initials throughout. This work concerns the history of Holland, its fortunes and misfortunes ("€œdisasters," translated literally), divided into two parts. Du Toict relates the history of the old Dutch government in this volume, with the rise of towns and factions, which in Holland were more important than central governments. The work also comments on the disastrous impact of conflicts between the churches. The book is dedicated to his majesty Wilhelm Henrik, Prince of Orange, Katzenellenbogen. Francis Bacon (British-Irish
This lot consists of a HAND SIGNED and Numbered fine art print on paper, hand signed 'Francis Bacon' and numbered '70/100'. Against a forbidding background of pure black, the blurred, almost nightmarish face of a shirtless man is depicted head-on. His face is a swirling, shadowy conglomerate of dark tones - blue, green, blood red. Harsh highlights accentuate the artist's smeared (yet deliberate) disproportions. This piece was created in the grotesque Expressionist style of Francis Bacon (British-Irish, 1902-1992). Overall excellent condition. Image is depressed into the paper indicating plate marks. Overall measures 8.5" x 11.5". \n\nFinger Lakes Auction has been commissioned to liquidate several important collections of fine art.
