ERNST OPPLER 1867-1929 Hannover 1867 – 1929 Berlin (German) Title: Russian Ballet | Rüssisches Ballett, 1913 Technique: Original Hand Signed and Inscribed Etching on Van Gelder Zonen Laid Paper Paper size: 19 x 25 cm. / 7.5 x 9.8 in. Image size: 32 x 39 cm. / 12.6 x 15.4 in. Additional Information: This etching is hand signed in pencil by the artist "Ernst Oppler" at the lower right margin. It is hand inscribed with the title in pencil “Rüssisches Ballett” [Russian Ballet] at the lower left margin. The work is also signed in the plate “E. Oppler” at the lower right image. It was printed for inclusion in the Zeitschrift für Bildende Kunst [ Journal of Fine Arts], Leipzig in 1913. The paper bears a partial Van Gelder Zonen watermark. Another impression of this subject is found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, New York. Condition: Very good condition. Adhesive staining in all four corners. Soft creasing and minor nicks along the upper and lower sheet edges. Remnants of hinging tape at two points along the upper sheet edge, verso. Gildens Arts

BEN SHAHN 1898-1969 Kaunas, Lithuania 1899 - 1969 New York (American / Lithuanian) Title: Menorah, 1965 Technique: Original Hand Signed Silkscreen with Extensive Hand Colouring with Gouache and Applied Gold Leaf on Japan paper Paper size: 68.5 x 52 cm / 27 x 20.5 in Additional Information: This original Silksceen is hand signed in ink by the artist "Ben Shahn" at the lower right part. The printed portions of this silkscreen are the black outline of the Menorah and the grey lines which subdivide the multicoloured areas. The various shades of blue and purple were hand painted by Ben Shahn at a later time. The colours and application of gold leaf differ somewhat from print to print, making each impression a unique print. The work was published in 1965 in a very small edition of only 25 impressions of which only two were hand signed. Another impression of this work was sold in Christies New York 8-9 February 2007 (lot 22) for $3360. Provenance: Kennedy Galleries Inc, New York (their label verso) Literature: 1.
