Untitled Studio Artwork by Freeman W. Butts (1928-1998)
This is one of a series of untitled studio artworks by Freeman W. Butts from a period of interchanging mediums including ink, graphite, charcoal, marker, watercolor, and acrylic. Artist stamp, initial, and date are included on each artwork. From the 1980s into the early 1990s Freeman covered more surface area of fine art paper than most artists complete in a lifetime. This artwork represents some of his most definitive examples of freedom and honesty in his exploration of the female form. These artworks were created with the assistance of live models using an interchangeable mixture of mediums. Frequently working on paper layering mediums at will, Freeman clearly identified these methods of layering to capture a fluidity in his subjects. Abstractions and definition to his figures are captured in these signed, stamped and dated works on paper. Frequently Freeman would work his way through boxes of paper only to return them to the boxes, and to a shelf, and stored, until his untimely death. These works on paper are from one of those boxes that havenÕt been seen since shortly after they were made. His work is part of a legacy of Montana artists from the Bozeman, Livingston, and greater Montana area art community that offered support from artists like Bob and Gennie DeWeese, Ray Campeau, Rudy and Lela Autio, Russell Chatham, Theodore Waddell, Gaylen Hansen, and Heidi Oberheide.
