Thomas Del Mar

Thomas Del Mar is a London-based auction house, specializing in weapons, armour and militaria. The auction house, which is in association with Sotheby's, was founded by Thomas Del Mar in 2005. Thomas Del Mar has previously been head of Sotheby's Worldwide Department of Arms, Armour and Militaria. He has also worked at auctions conducted by Sotheby's worldwide. Thomas Del Mar runs the auction house together with consultants Peter Smith and Ian Eaves, who previously were his colleagues at Sotheby's.

A NORTH GERMAN FAULD, BRUNSWICK, CIRCA 1560-70; A FURTHER TWO SIMILAR, CIRCA 1560-70, AND THE LOWEST LAME OF ANOTHER, CIRCA 1560-70 the first formed of two upward-overlapping lames of which the uppermost is pierced to either side with an oval hole to accommodate a pierced stud, and to the inside of it with a smaller hole for an associated swivel-hook, the left one still present, and the second lame fitted to either side of its upper edge with two (originally three) brass-capped rivets and brass rosette washers, and finished at its lower edge with a roped inward turn slightly arched over the crotch where it is bordered by a pair of grooves (oxidised overall); the second in each case of similar construction to the first but lacking any fittings and decorated with three recessed vertical bands on a formerly black-from-the-hammer ground (the lames presently articulated to one another by screws, and lightly patinated overall); and the third similar to the lowest lames of the second but with a keyhole slot at each end of its upper edge and undecorated (lightly patinated overall) (4) Provenance The Brunswick Ducal Armoury, Wolfenbüttel Schloss Marienburg Thomas Del Mar

A SOUTH GERMAN 'BLACK AND WHITE' BURGONET, CIRCA 1570-80 with one-piece skull boxed in four panels and rising at its apex to an acorn finial, projecting forward at the brow to an obtusely-pointed integral peak, fitted just above the latter with three lining-rivets of which two retain brass rosette washers, flanged outwards at its rear to receive a matching one-piece neck-guard (pierced at its centre with a later suspension-hole), and fitted at each side with a hinged cheek-piece ( the left torn from its hinge and both hinges replaced) flanged outwards at its lower edge to serve as a continuation of the neck-guard and pierced at its centre with five small auditory-holes in dice-formation, the main edges of the helmet formed with notched inward turns accompanied by raised borders, and its surfaces decorated with four radiating raised bands, all burnished bright against a blackened ground (refreshed with paint; some bruising and cracking) 27.0 cm; 10? in Thomas Del Mar
