Vincent Van Gogh: Double-sided Sketchbook Drawing

Vincent Van Gogh Attributed: Tree Study, signed Vincent, and Landscape with Haystack, unsigned, pen and ink drawings on both sides of a single sketchbook page. Unframed. This page was removed from a cardboard and linen sketchbook measuring approximately 6 x 9 inches, and formerly containing 11 sheets of drawings and sketches Attributed: "Sommige kleine tekeningen van Vincent van Gogh. Uit de collective van mijn grootvader." [Some small drawings by Vincent van Gogh. From the collection of my grandfather.] The cover is signed S. James van den Bergh. The style of the cover's pencil inscription is consistent with its age. A photo of the sketchbook cover is part of this listing, for reference, but the cover is not included with the lot. The two drawings on this page show the mature drawing style of Vincent Van Gogh. They are dominated by the easy-flowing rhythm for which his drawings are prized. It is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity/attribution by painting conservator/art historian Bruce Wood, MFA. The drawing on the front of this sketchbook page directly relates to, and is a possible study for the front tree in Vincent van Gogh drawing Cypresses, 1889, in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, and also his oil on canvas painting Cypresses with Two Female Figures, Saint-Remy, France, 1889, in the collection of the Kroller-Muller Museum, Otterlo, The Netherlands. Henri Duhem & Emile Breton: Winter Snow in the Village

Henri Duhem (France,1860-1941) and Emile Breton (France, 1831-1902)(Attributed*, in the manner of the artists): Winter Snow in the Village, signed in pencil, verso, Henri Duheim et Emile Breton. Oil on woden panel, unframed. This painting is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from Leighton Fine Art, Ltd., Buckinghamshire, U.K. Henri Duhem was descended from an old Flemish family and originally practiced as a lawyer. In 1887, his passion for drawing and watercolors finally led him to go to Paris and enroll in the drawing classes of Henri Harpignies. While there, he became friends with Emile-Adelard Breton, a French painter and engraver best known for his moody nocturnal landscapes with figures, who introduced him to oil painting. Breton's niece, Virginie Demont-Breton (the daughter of Jules Breton), introduced him to a young painter named Marie Sergeant, whom he married in 1890. At about that time, Demont-Breton moved to a small village named Wissant. Encouraged to follow, the Duhems established a home in Camiers and gathered their artist friends together to form what would be known as the "Ecole de Wissant", some of the most notable members of which were Georges Maroniez, Francis Tattegrain and Fernand Stievenart. In 1893, he fully abandoned his legal career to devote himself to art, both as a creator and an avid collector of work by his contemporaries. He and his wife travelled extensively as he began to exhibit more widely abroad. The works of both artists are represented in prominent art museums in the United States and Europe.Where this painting is more in the mature style of Emile Breton, it may be one of Henri Duhem's earliest oil paintings, made under the tutelage of Breton. Henri Matisse: Seated Woman Wearing a Hat

Henri Matisse (1869-1954)Attributed: Seated Woman wearing a Hat, pen and black ink drawing, signed Matisse, dated, appears to be a companion study to the Reclining Nude with Hat (Lot 956E). This drawing is most likely a sketch for Matisse's series of paintings similar to Draped Nude, painted in 1936. This oil on canvas is second in a series of four that Matisse painted in the spring of 1936. Like the pen and black ink sketch that is also dated 1936, the woman portrayed is semi-nude, wearing nothing but a floral robe draped over her. She poses nonchalantly and seems to stare past the viewer in an aloof manner. In both images, not much takes place in the background but we notice the chair she lounges on which serves to place her in a relaxed, intimate setting- perhaps a harem. The painting shown as a reference photo is owned by the Tate Museum, but is currently on loan and being displayed in the Seoul Olympic Museum of Art, Seoul, South Korea. Dimensions: 7.5x9.25 in. imageProvenance: Ivan Richard Kraskin, Paris, France, acquired from former owner who was a long time friend of Kraskin's. Property of a private corporation..NOTES: Please refer to our Terms and Conditions prior to bidding. Color fidelity of photos presented is not guaranteed.
