From a portfolio of proofs published by members of The Society of Wood Engravers, and presented in a mat bearing the debossed logo of that society. Framed with new glazing and moulding.Read more

Crib With 12 Painted Panels depicting biblical scenes. Tempera paint on wood, 16th/17th Century. The painting style is possibly Italian, and the only inscription, in a stylized cloud above the head of Mary in a scene of the Annunciation, appears to be written in Litterae ignotae, a language invented in the 12th Century by Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179). Litterae ignotae was perpetuated by nuns as a secret language.
