Staghorn Netsuke Bekkako Boy by Meiun Ex Royal, 19th C

19th century staghorn netsuke of a sitting boy tugging at his face below his eye with a smiling expression, while hiding an oni mask behind his back. This gesture, called Bekkako, is from a child's game and translates as something like "see my eye" while teasing a playmate to guess what is it that you are hiding. Beautifully carved, wonderful face with subtle smile and moveable tongue, excellent etching of textile patterns. Typical natural blemishes to the antler material on top and bottom of the piece with carved plugs, eyes of the mask are inlaid with metal. Signed MEIUN on mother of pearl plaque on the bottom - the artist is listed on p. 753 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Comes from the collection of His Royal Highness Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester - a tag is attached. Height 1 1/4 inches. Please note that this lot has a confidential reserve.
