Mitchells

Located on the fringe of the English Lake District in the Georgian market town of Cockermouth, birthplace of the poet William Wordsworth, Mitchells is one of the UK’s leading provincial salerooms holding quarterly two day Antiques and Fine Art Sales and twice yearly Sporting Sales.

Mitchells Auction Company was established in 1873 as auctioneers of both livestock and furniture. The company founder Robinson Mitchell is credited with developing the first purpose-built livestock auction mart in England.

Mitchell’s saleroom complex in Cockermouth town centre is without doubt one of the most atmospheric in the country with its traditional octagonal auction ring surrounded by tiered wooden bench seating which conjures up a bygone age and is completely suited to the sale of antique furniture and effects. The adjacent gallery spaces are spacious and atmospherically lit providing a high quality setting and pleasant ambience for the display and viewing of antique furnishings and fine art goods for sale.

Mitchells are noted for the exceptional quality of photographic illustration in their auction catalogues which are marketed internationally for the benefit of clients. Their dedicated staff team are also regarded by clients as being amongst the most friendly, helpful and efficient in the country.
