A portrait miniature of Elizabeth Jopling, nee Bradley (1741-1821)

Wearing white dress and matching bonnet set in the original frame with pierced scrolling frame Elizabeth Jopling was the daughter or Robert and Lydia Bradley. She married Robert Jopling, a Ropemaker. Their daughter Elizabeth married Robert Collins (1757-1809), who had been a surgeon in India. Robert returned to English with his two oldest children, Harriet and Amherst,by about 1790. Elizabeth and Robert Collins then had four more children; Catherine(Kate), Maria, Marion and Anthony. A number of Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills have survived for these people. They make interesting reading. In the Will of Lydia Bradley she states that she leaves her daughter Elizabeth Jopling the rent of the Ropeground. "I leave to my daughter E.Jopling all my household furniture, and half of all my plate, linen and china, and the other half to my grand-daughter E.Jopling, and I bequeath to my grand-daughter E.Jopling £1,000 in 3% Bank Stock, to be paid to her at my decease, and my daughter £2,000..." On the expiry of her lease of the Ropeground, her estate funds are to go to her daughter Elizabeth Jopling for her lifetime, and thereafter to her grand-daughter Elizabeth Jopling. This Will was written on the 10th May 1786, in the parish of St Paul's in Shadwell, London. Lydia was a Widow. Elizabeth, the subject in this miniature is entered in the register of burials at St Stephen's Ipswich "Elizabeth Jopling in this Parish aged 79 15 March 1821.>"Read more
