D’apparentes étymologies préparaient aussi le nouveau travail des esprits chercheurs sur l’essence d’Hermès. Depuis Platon, le verbe ἑρμηνεύειν, qui désigne l’interprétation de la pensée, le don d’expression, paraissait apparenté au nom du dieu. Une confusion cherchée et voulue avec un des dieux égyptiens fit le reste ou y aida beaucoup. Le Thoth à tête d’ibis, honoré à Hermopolis, mais venu peut-être de Phénicie, représentant l’invention de l’alphabet et la mesure du temps, était depuis longtemps connu en Grèce. On fut de plus en plus frappé des caractères qui lui sont communs avec Hermès, et, quand Alexandrie fut fondée, on se plut à mêler leurs attributs Ce dieu de l’ingéniosité était représenté avec une grande plume d’ibis au-dessus du front. Or, sur un groupe en bronze d’Antioche où Hermès lutteur terrasse un personnage inconnu, entre ses deux ailes, une plume est fixée au bandeau dont sa tête est ceinte. Il est vrai que cet appendice peut tout aussi bien être une partie de fleur de lotus, et la question a été curieusement discutée par les archéologues. Il suffit, pour établir l’identification voulue des deux divinités, que le même attribut caractéristique soit au front de l’un et de l’autre. C’est le cas, puisqu’un assez grand nombre de bronzes gréco-romains le prêtent à Hermès et que même on trouve le dieu accompagné d’un ibis. Que le bronze d’Antioche soit du temps des Séleucides ou de celui des Antonins, la donnée qu’il nous fournit est confirmée par Diodore de Sicile, qui voit en Hermès le compatriote et le compagnon apprécié d’Osiris.
