BHABHA, HOMI JEHANGIR. Autograph Letter Signed - (ALS)
BHABHA, HOMI JEHANGIR. ALS. 2pp. 8vo. Boston, June 4, 1953. On Hotel Statler letterhead. To Dutch-born, American physicist Samuel Goudsmit (1902-1978): "This is just a note to tell you that I am in this country again and will be here till the end of the month. I am leaving tomorrow for Washington, D.C. (Shoreham Hotel) where I expect to spend a week. I also expect to spend a week in New York (Plaza Hotel) before I leave. I would like to visit Brookhaven again and see what is going on, and hope to visit you when I do this. If you are in New York or Washington, will you please contact me at the addresses given above. P.S. Will you please pass on the word to Salant that I am here. Rossi will send on a paper I have given him. The Institute would like to have 250 reprints. As regards the curves, it would be useful if it could be reproduced large so that readers could see them for quantitative work. I believe these are the best measurements so far on the equator." Trained at Cambridge, Bhabha became well connected in the world of nuclear physics, before returning to India to take a position at the Indian Institute of Science working with Nobel Prize-winner C.V. Raman. It was at Bhabha's instigation and with the aid of several of his international colleagues that an Indian institute for nuclear research was formed. Goudsmit moved to the Brookhaven National Laboratories in 1948 and became chairman of its physics department as well as editor of The Physical Review. Our letter also mentions physicists E.O. Salant and Italian born Bruno Rossi (1905-1993). Goudsmit has typed a transcription beneath each line of Bhabha's difficult handwriting. Date stamped with staple holes in the upper left corner.
