An English Carved Marine Ivory Lottery or Teetotum Gambling
An English Carved Marine Ivory Lottery or Teetotum Gambling Ball. The ball etched with a Crown or Coronet and Incised on 32 Sides with the Numbers 1 to 31. The Ivory of an old smooth cream yellow patination with numerous dirty small hairline cracks. 5cm diameter. Teetotum balls gave a gambler more of a winning chance than a spinning a normal dice, because when thrown the faceted numbered sides of a ball give an equal chance of winning on any number turning up, unlike a normal dice. Lotteries first began to become an acceptable form of raising money for governments under the reign ofElizabeth I in the years 1568-69 when urgent repairs to the harbours and the coastal fortifications of England were needed to due to the threat of a seaborne invasion from the Spanish. Successive Acts of Parliament then established lotteries as a legitimate means of increasing revenue for the Government and they became a lucrative source of income even during the Commonwealth Period under the puritanical rule of Oliver Cromwell!
