1805 (18 Nov) St Salvador, All Saints Brasil. Original very long letter from a naval officer (Edmund Johnson) in Brazil to his brother (William) the extensive contents relate to natives in canoes principally Negroes paddling towards us on a rough sea of which we took on board, heavy weights of cannons on poles carried by slaves, the bay is well defended, unpleasant fever, the French wanting to turn Brasil into a colony and take over Portugal overthrowing the king, with the English seriously intends an attack in such circumstances, the interior churches are magnificent with silver and gold, the church of the Franciscan Convent is I think the richest and the monarchy of the Benedictine, an unfortunate monk was burnt at the stake regarding theft of some of the treasures of the church, funds of £120,000 for the paying of the company's troops, and much more, interesting first hand account of military goings on.
