19th Century Meissen porcelain nine piece monkey band set

About the object

This set of nine figures by Meissen was inspired by the famous monkey orchestra produced for Meissen in the 18th Century by Johann Joachim Kändler (German, 1706-1775). Kändler was one of the most important porcelain artists to have worked for Meissen during its Rococo-period heyday, and his monkey orchestra is perhaps his most celebrated masterpiece. This set of nine porcelain figures shows monkeys in 18th Century period dress, including powdered wigs and dress coats. The band consists of one conductor, holding a scroll, two trumpeters, two bagpipe players, a triangle player and two flautists. The underside of each figure is stamped with the blue crossed swords mark of the Meissen factory.
