About the object

This leather Cutlery Barrel contains a glass beaker which in turn holds a leather pad fitted to hold a knife, fork and spoon. The cutlery all folds to minimise its size for travel and is made of steel with ivory scales to the handles. There are no maker’s marks. The leather to the case and pad is rolled with a cross hatched design and the 2 halves of the barrel case are marked with gilt dots to ensure the top is always fitted to the bottom correctly. The top of the case has a blank shield plate for engraving. A number of similar cutlery barrels were made from the mid to the end of the 19th century and they were popular not just with the military but also for field sports and picnics. Late 19th Century. Case Size is given.
