Ming Kraak Blue and White Large Dish

About the object

Late Ming – Transitional – made during the reign of Chongzhen at Jingdezhen an excellent deep Kraak dish for export to Europe. The painting to the centre shows an angry bird perched on a rock and a second in flight. The rockwork is surrounded by flowering plants with peony and chrysanthemum. The central panel has a scalloped border of alternating geometric designs. The cavetto is also painted with alternating panels of Sunflowers or various scholars motifs which are separated by bands of small panels of geometric designs and dots. In Kraak Porcelain a Moment in the History of Trade by Maura Rinaldi it is dated to 1640-1645
