Buddhist zushi- Gilt, Colour & Lacquered Wood - Kōbō-Daishi 弘法大師 - Japan - ca. 1950s (Mid Showa period)\n\nThis is a beautiful small, complete, Saint Kōbō-Daishi ( 弘法大師 The Grand Master Who Propagated the Buddhist Teaching) \n\nZushi Shingon Buddhist Butsudan (仏壇, literally "Buddhist altar") From the mid 20th Century ( 1950s approximately) dating from the Showa Era 昭和の時代 ( 1926-1989). It is hand crafted in laquered, gold Gilt wood, and hand painted coloured wood. \n\nKūkai, also known posthumously as Kōbō-Daishi, 774835, was a Japanese Buddhist monk, civil servant, scholar, poet, and artist who founded the Esoteric Shingon or "mantra" school of Buddhism. Shingon followers usually refer to him by the honorific title of Odaishisama and the religious name of Henjō-Kongō. He is considered a Saint. \n\nHere he sits on a large, high chair. He holds colored glass beads and a sacred object (often missing) . His shoes are set beneath the chair ( often missing). He wears the traditional robes of a Japanese Buddhist Monk from the Heian Period ( 794-1185).\n\nThe Zushi box is complete also with brass decorative hinges, fittings, and catch. ( the doors and catch are a little stiff to close please use carefully).\n\nOriginally part of an old Japanese family shrine, from a old rural house clearance, imported directly from Japan by me.\n\nA wonderful statue for the collector, altar, or an impressive interior design statement.\n\nCONDITION: \n\nGood. Patina, wear, small scratches, fading, dust. Minor loss, discolouration and fading of gold gilt, colour, brass fittings, and laquer, all usual for age/wear. \n\n\nAGE/ORIGIN: \nMid 20th Century. Showa Period. 1950s approximately. Japan.\n\nPROVENANCE: Japanese Antique Dealer, Japan.
