About the object

William Ruser began his career in jewelry working for Trabert & Hoeffer-Mauboussin Jewelers in Atlantic City, New Jersey – a position that ultimately saw his transfer to their Beverly Hills location. While working for the brand, Ruser purchased a collection of American freshwater pearls whose unique shapes and textures ultimately inspired his first collection, which he offered from his own eponymous jewelry store that opened on Rodeo Drive in 1947. This first collection came to be indicative of the sculptural, figural style that Ruser would come to be known and sought after for. Common motifs in Ruser pieces are floral bouquets, small animals and children, all done in a uniquely whimsical style that is exemplary of the jeweler’s ingenuity and craftsmanship. He quickly became a favorite of Hollywood (actress Ava Gardner is said to have been particularly fond of his creations), and though Russer died in 1994, his work is still prized for its glamorous and fanciful aesthetic.
