U.S. Contract Assembled Flintlock Musket with Ketland Lock
Closed Auction

About the object

This musket has "UNITED/STATES" vertically and lightly arched at the tail of the lock and "KETLAND" marked on the inside. It is unclear who manufactured these muskets, but Ketland & Co. of England exported the locks. As noted on page 545 of "Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms and Their Values, 9th Edition," the Ketlands exported 3,000 musket locks that were sent out from the government stores to various American gunmakers to use on their contract muskets. There were also a variety of other complete guns exported by the Ketlands for the fur trade and general gun trade. Some of the family members also moved to Philadelphia in the 1780s. These Ketland marked U.S. muskets are very desirable variations given only 3,000 are believed to have been manufactured. Additional features are generally standard for the Model 1795 contract muskets including a sunken "eagle head/P" proof on the left at the breech, sling swivels passing through studs on the middle barrel band and trigger guard (type I style without screws), and buttstock with long fluted comb.
