Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, ceramic artist and graphic artist. From 1900, he was active in France. Along with Matisse, Picasso is considered a preeminent artist of the twentieth century. His style evolved through various periods, such as the Blue Period and the Rose Period, with circus scenes and harlequins.
Inspired by African sculptures, in 1907 he made his first Cubist painting: “The Young Ladies of Avignon”. Together with Braque, he further developed Cubism by breaking down surfaces and reproducing them in various concurrent motifs. In the 1920s, he worked with the subtle shapes of Surrealism while making line drawings and etchings. In the painting “Guernica”, he protested the Spanish Civil War, which was deeply upsetting to him. He lived on the Mediterranean in the late 1940s, and there, he painted nymphs, fauns and centaurs. He also made works in the style of the old masters and painted terracotta ceramics in Vallauris.
