Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Bruegel (also Breughel) was a Netherlandish painter and printmaker, whose winter landscapes and genre scenes can be seen in the finest museums in the world. He became famed in his own lifetime (1525-1569) for his lively paintings of peasants and rural village life. Bruegel’s c.1558 work Landscape with the Fall of Icarus was referenced in a 1938 poem by Auden, which famously claimed: ’About suffering they were never wrong, the old Masters’.
