John T. Biggers

Biggers was an American painter and muralist, who was deeply influenced by traditional African myth, as well as the culture of the Southern States of the USA. One of his most prominent recurrent motifs is the ’shotgun house’, and his works address themes of culture, identity, and the domestic sphere. In 2009, the auction record for Biggers’ work was set at Swann Galleries, when Shotguns (1987) sold for $216,000.
