Alexander Roslin (1718-1793) Sweden

Alexander Roslin was a Swedish portrait painter who was mainly active in Paris. At the age of sixteen, Roslin was apprenticed to the court painter Georg Engelhard Schröder in Stockholm. Originally he intended to be a ship painter, but later began to paint large portraits in oil.
Roslin became a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris. During his lifetime he painted the French royal family and French princes of that time on several occasions. Roslin's main strength was his astounding use of color and his superb virtuosity at painting garments, silks and embroidery.
Roslin is viewed as one of Sweden's most internationally acclaimed artists and his works can be found at Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
