Baroque

Baroque reached the Nordic countries around 1650 and lasted until the 1720s. The Swedish decorative arts were largely influenced by the Germans and Dutch with their heavy, robust furniture made of fine woods. Among the royalty and nobility, the Franco-Italian influence was evident with its vibrant colors and gilding. The word Baroque derives from the Portuguese “barroco” which means “irregular pearl.” The term was first used once the era had passed and then to connote the “excessive” and “strange.”
