Henri Matisse (1869–1954) France

Henri Matisse was a French painter and sculptor. Matisse began to study art at the Académie Julien in 1891 where he became a prominent figure for an artistic movement called Fauvism and was considered to be an early Modernist. Matisse drew inspiration from artists such as Paul Cezanne and Edouard Manet. Matisse trained several Swedes, including Sigrid Hjertén and Einar Jolin, at a school he founded, Academie Matisse. Matisse’s work is currently represented at many of the world's greatest museums and we can find several of his works at Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
