Hans J Wegner (1914-2007) Denmark

Hans J. Wegner was a Danish furniture designer and architect. Wegner was trained as a carpenter and studied from 1936 to 1938 at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen.

Among Wegner’s best-known models are his chair designs “C25” and the “Y chair,” which clearly exemplify Wegner's characteristic style, unifying beauty with function. Wegner designed more than 500 types of chair and collaborated with designers such as Arne Jacobsen and Børge Mogensen. In addition to furniture Wegner also designed lamps, objects made from silver and wallpaper.

Wegner's US breakthrough came when Nixon and Kennedy each carried out their election debates sitting in a Wegner chair, which became known as “the Chair.”

Wegner's furniture is currently manufactured under license by Carl Hansen & Son.
