Jacques Louis David (1748-1825) France

Jacques-Louis David was a French painter and furniture designer. During his years spent training with Joseph Marie Vien, David took to the bright, light Rococo style of his teacher. He later moved away from Rococo in favor of classicism, becoming one of the leading figures in Neoclassicism.
Visual artists of the Roman Republic, such as Raphael, Caravaggio, and Michelangelo, inspired David in his painting approach. It is said that Caravaggio’s paintings in particular inspired the artist in his transition to classicism.
