Sofas date back to antiquity, being reserved for the rich and those with status; today, the sofa is one of the most common pieces of domestic furniture, and plays an integral role in the home. Sofas have developed greatly in terms of shape, design and material, evolving over the years to improve comfort, practicality and appearance. The popularisation of upholstery finally introduced comfortable padded seating to the sofa, which is covered in materials such as leather or fabric. A classic sofa design which remains a firm favourite is the Chesterfield; supposedly commissioned by the Earl of Chesterfield during the 18th century, it is still coveted today for its distinctive deep buttons and rolled arms. Other iconic sofa designs include the Bridgewater, the Cabriole, the Lawson and the loveseat.
