Lucie Rie was an Austrian potter who started out studying under Michael Powolny. She opened her first studio 1925 in Vienna, but emigrated to Great Britain in 1938 due to the uprising of the nazis. She then opened a new studio at 18 Albion Mews, London, which has now been reconstructed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Rie was an admirer of Bernard Leach, but in contrast to his works, hers was often colorful and modernistic.
