In a complete u-turn from the bikini-clad models which usually grace the pages of the calendar, the 2016 edition, shot by Annie Leibovitz, features famous females from the world of film, literature, art, sport and philanthropy.

Leibovitz's line-up includes tennis ace Serena Williams, comedian Amy Schumer, artist and activist Yoko Ono, writer Fran Leibowitz, founder of Rookie Tavi Gevinson, musician Patti Smith, model Natalia Vodianova, chairperson of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy, actress Yao Chen, chairman of MoMA PS1 Agnes Gund and her granddaughter, Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat, chairman of Dreamworks Animation Mellody Hobson and director/screenwriter Ava DuVernay.

In every month, as well a stunningly intimate portrait, there is an explanation of the featured woman's work.

The Pirelli calendar has become something of a collectible. Editions sell well at auction and $2 000 was paid for the 50th anniversary book.
