On Sunday, 29 April, the renowned auction house Hôtel des Ventes de Monte-Carlo (HVMC) will hold one of its much-awaited sales. With 238 items, the auction spans a variety of genres, and features everything from drawings and paintings to Asian art and tapestries. A wonderful music instrument collection will even be on show…

The Hôtel des Ventes de Monte-Carlo relies on a large network of international experts to handpick the best in paintings, sculpture, jewellery, fashion and much more. A fitting expertise in the principality of luxury.

There is no shortage of remarkable paintings in this sale, but the highlight may well be Claude Joseph Vernet’s Shipwreck on a Rocky Shore. Dating from 1755, just as the famous landscape painter was starting his series on the Harbours of France commissioned by Louis XV, it depicts a stunning pre-romantic sea-scape. It is estimated between £50,000 and £70,000.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all? Maybe this exquisite 17th century mirror will settle the score. Intricately carved, it features an intriguing fauna of angels, monsters and birds. With a starting price of £5,000, it’s well worth a look.

The sale preview would not be complete without mentioning the exceptional collection of musical instruments of Opera singer Evan Gorga. Ivory instruments and a bow belonging to violinist Eugène Ysaÿe will be on offer.

And for those who wish to go back in time even further, a sale dedicated to archaeology will be following on Sunday 6 May 2018. Stay tuned…
