For artist Ed Ruscha, the desert affair has served him as a source of inspiration. To pay homage to the festival, come April 2017, he will launch Desert X, Coachella's arty sister.

Ruscha's work has focused on decoding the American landscape, once stating in an interview with Details: ''I had to go see Europe. I had notions about it, mostly through American movies.''

''Then I got there and it was all really new and unique to me, but I still craved American things. I wasn't captivated by the romance of Paris or London. I love visiting, but I'd rather be in L.A.''

Ruscha is on the board of the nonprofit group, who are behind the biennial. The board includes Coachella art director Paul Clemente, Steve Nash formerly of Palm Springs Art Museum and art collector Beth Rudin DeWoody. Desert X will be funded by members of the board as well as from the event itself.

Come April 2017, time to dig out your festival head ware for a host of Desert X selfies.
