The piece was purchased in 1987 from Syllavethy Gallery in Aberdeen, who represented the artist at the time, and has been consigned for sale from a private collection.

Chen was a child prodigy, selected to be trained at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts at the age of 14. Now living and working in America, but a regular visitor to Britain, his paintings have been selected for the Chinese National Art Exhibitions; the Paris Salon and for others around the world including Yugoslavia (1982), Australia (1984), Japan (1984), Canada (1984), and Brazil (1985). In 1987, Chen was one of the contemporary Chinese masters whose works were selected to be included in a People's Republic of China exhibition in New York, followed by two successful one-man shows at the Robert Hefner Galleries in New York, which established his reputation in the United States.

Remaining in the U.S. to study, he graduated from the Oklahoma City University in 1988, and worked subsequently as a tutor there. His outstanding talent won him the national prize in a portraiture competition held in conjunction with the Federation of British Artists in 1991 and in 1999, he was commissioned to paint a formal portrait of the Queen, which was selected as postage stamp for the Queen's Golden Jubilee 2002. He subsequently painted Prince Philip and the Princess Royal.
