The film stars Timothy Spall as Turner and explores his relationship with his father, his sexual interest in his housekeeper as well as his place within the Royal Academy.

Leigh explores Turner's inspiration and the convoluted relationship between artist and subject. In the film we see the land and seascapes which influenced Turner, he cries whilst drawing a young prostitute and ties himself to the mast of a ship as part of his artistic quest for meaning.
