The sale also saw LS Lowry's The Railway Platform sell for a hammer price of £1 650 500. Another great British sculptor's work which sold for an impressive figure was Dame Barbara Hepworth's 1953 hand sculpture which fetched £1 426 500.

Other works which sold for over £1 million included David Bomberg's painting of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and Sir Stanley Spencer's Hilda with Bluebells.

It seems the demand for modern British artwork, especially by Lowry and Moore, continues to rise.
