The Catalan artist Joaquin Mir Trinxet was one of the artists whose works were selected for the show. Mir Trinxet and his Catalan contemporaries had endured great political upheaval during the foundations of their careers. The art that was born from such social change in the Catalan region would become to be known as modernisme.

For a large part of the beginnings of his career, Mir Trinxet worked in Malloria in isolation from his peers. It was here that he discovered his focus for colour and light, a focus that would later become synonymous with his work.

At the turn of the century, the artist had his first exhibition in Barcelona. Although the critics were kind, the public were not so fond of his playing with colour and light.

Mir Trinxet did not travel to Paris to pursue his artistic flair, unlike many of his Spanish contemporaries. Therefore his works were not influenced by the French Impressionists. Instead the modernisme artists of the Catalan region gathered in Barcelona.

It was his use of light and colour that distinguished Mir Trinxet from the French Impressionists. His oeuvre was distinctively modern, and was years ahead of art movements of his time such as Impressionism and Symbolism, with his works jumping the line between realism and abstract.

In 1902, work began on the Casa Trinxet. The building, which was finished in 1904, was described by the artist as ''one of the jewels of Barcelona Modernisme.'' Built in the Eixample district of Barcelona, the house was commissioned by Mir Trinxet's uncle. It was an example of how, during the modernisme period, the most wealthy of the catalán bourgeoisie commissioned buildings.

Although names such as Mir Trinket, Santiago Rusiñol, Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench as well as others may not be recognisable outside of Spain, their impact on the Spanish art at the beginning of the 20th century was mighty.
