For Vogue's 125th anniversary September issue, artist John Currin, known for his erotically charged works, has depicted Lawrence in a rather demure manner, wearing a Miu Miu purse and hat. Currin's work could be lifted right out of art history, with its sumptuous rococo palette and portraiture techniques borrowed from Dutch Old Masters.

Currin is not known for his attention to realism, however, as this portrait of one of the world's biggest stars was going to grace one of the world's most important magazine covers, the artist said it had ''to look like her [Jennifer Lawrence.]''

In the past, Vogue has commissioned other artists including Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol to create artworks for the iconic front cover spot.

In 1991, Currin painted a portrait of a nude Bea Arthur, which in 2013 sold at Christie's in New York for $1.9 million. It was later revealed that American TV personality Jimmy Kimmel may have been the one to buy it when his comedian pal Jeff Ross tweeted a 'thank you' shout out to the talkshow host.
