Sale estimates will range from £500 to £15,000, spanning the 16th century Venetian school to a sought-after studio collection by contemporary British artist Michael J Strang. The showpiece of this dynamic collection is A portrait of a Milanese Nobleman in Armour, an oil painting attributed to Carlos Ceresa that typifies his sober, understated approach combined with the vivid colour of the Venetian school. Ceresa was a skilful portrait painter whose services were sought after by the noble families of the city.

183Attributed to Carlos Ceresa, A portrait of a Milanese Nobleman in Armour. Estimate price from £10,000-£15,000

The Italian theme continues with a stunning scene of A Venetian Backwater with a figure in a Gondola and St Mark's Square in the distance, again an oil on canvas, by French artist Antoine Bouvard (1870-1956). The signed landscape is estimated from £3,000-£5,000.

Among the British artists is Michael J Strang, who has been described as a modern day romantic. The auction features a studio collection of five works from this celebrated contemporary artist. Strang has said that he seeks to absorb and then reproduce the natural world, habitually forming fixations with various locations to which he frequently returns - Long Rock, near Penzance, and Porthmear at St Ives are such examples. His paintings are now in great demand with work in many public collections including the Royal Cornwall Museum, the National Museum of Wales and, most recently, a charcoal portrait drawing at the Ashmolean in Oxford. Leda and the Swan, a large signed and dated work in pencil by Betty Swanwick, drawn in the year of her death in 1989 is also featured. Swanwick was a versatile artist who was also a designer, muralist and illustrator. She was well-known for designing an album cover 'Selling England by the Pound' for the band  Genesis as well as posters for London Transport. Leda and the Swan is estimated from £800-£1,200.

The line-up of British artists also includes James Sant with a charming Victorian portrait of a young girl, entitled Pensive Thought and Roberto Angelo Kittermaster Marshall's watercolour, Sunshine and Showers, on The River Test, Hampshire. John Nicholson's Fine Paintings Sale is being held on 9th July.
