Famed for his work with balloon animals, banal sculptures and highly polished surfaces, Koons kitsch work has divided critics throughout the years. Koons holds a world record for the highest price for a work sold at auction by a living artist.

In Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale in New York Balloon Dog (Orange) sold for $58.4 million, making it the most expensive piece  to sell by an active artist.

The Neo-Pop artist has never been one to shy away from the media, his marriage to (and later divorce) from the Hungarian-Italian porn star Ciccolina made him hit the headlines. His works have even been mentioned in Jay-Z's song Picasso Baby, confirming his status as firm figure in popular culture.
