The four-leaf clover design which features in the Magic Alhambra, Lucky Alhambra and Sweet Alhambra lines by Van Cleef & Arpels dates back to 1968, when the symbol was first used by the jewellery designers. It was inspired by Jacques Arpels, the uncle of Van Cleef & Arpels' founder Estelle Arpels, who would collect four-leaf clovers in his garden for luck.

“To be lucky, you must believe in luck,” - Jacques Arpels.

In the 1970s, malachite Alhambra pieces were a coveted piece of jewellery. Princess Grace of Monaco wore a vintage malachite Alhambra long necklace, that has been part of important jewellery exhibitions. However, the design fell out of favour for decades, until in the early 2000s, when it soon became a red carpet favorite with Hollywood's most glamorous.

The Alhambra design is now as iconic as the Birkin bag or Gucci's Horsebit icon. The three lines are Magic Alhambra, which features both large and small clovers; Lucky Alhambra, featuring heart, leaf and butterfly shapes alongside the clovers; and Sweet Alhambra, designed for children.

The malachite 'Magic Alhambra' necklace featured will be part of Fellows' Antique & Modern Jewellery auction on 15th March, 2018. Check out more green pieces below. Search the full catalogue here.
