ai Ai Weiwei, Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads, 2010

Ai Weiwei's 12 gold-plated Zodiac heads entitled Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads, 2010 at £2-3 million held the highest estimate of the night. Telephone bidders from Russia and the US competed for the piece, with the American bidder setting the winning for £2.9 million, a new record for Weiwei.

The work depicts ancient Zodiac heads modelled on those that were created as part of a fountain at the Imperial Palace in Beijing, which were later looted.

The set sold at Phillips was the seventh edition of a series of eight. One set is being shown in Moscow, another in Bleinhem Palace, Oxfordshire, whilst  the other sets are in private collections. The seventh edition came from the Paul Kasmin Gallery, New York, where in 2011 it was priced at $1.8 million.
