Kate, who studied Art History at St.Andrew's where she met Prince William, saw pieces such as Jeremy Millar's Self portrait as a Drowned Man, which is a life-sized model of a drowned man, and others which are part of the Self: Image and Identity exhibition. Most significantly, the show includes the last self- portrait by Sir Anthony Van Dyck. The painting is on loan from the National Portrait Gallery, where Middleton is a patron.

The Duchess also viewed works by controversial British artists Tracey Emin and Gilbert and George. Kate also met with local artists John Davies, whose sculptural work Scarecrow, is featured in the exhibition.

The exhibition will be running until 2017. The museum is built on the same site as a boarding house Turner frequently stayed in.
