The artwork had an estimate of £12-18 million. Bidding opened at £9 million and then bids preceded to move slowly in the £100 000s with auctioneer Henry Wyndham apologising for the slow bidding, concluding the battle for the Klimt with ''Have we all had enough of this'' as the audience applauded.

This is the second highest price ever paid for a Klimt piece.

The total for the Impressionist and Modern art evening sale was £178.6 million against a £140.3-£203.2 million pre-sale estimate total.

Degas' beautiful bronze work Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans trumped its estimate of £9-12 million, as it sold for £14.8 million.

Max Liebermann's Two Riders on a Beach, which was one of the artworks discovered in Cornelius Gurlitt's Munich residence, sold for £1.9 million.  The Nazi-looted artwork had a pre sale estimate of £550 000 and finally sold for £1.865 million.
