Jean-Hubert Martin—the former director of the Musée National d’Art Moderne at the Centre Pompidou is behind the platform which delves into art's under-appreciated scenes with virtual exhibitions of artists from countries including Iran and Mozambique.

Collectionair is co-founded by Olivier Varenne, the international curator at the Museum of Old and New Art in Tasmania and Valerie Konde wtih a CV which includes Google.

As well as Jean-Hubert Martin, the panel of advisors includes senior director of the Saatchi Gallery Philippa Adams and Adelina von Fürstenberg, who last year curated the Armenian pavilion the Venice Biennale. Interestingly, the advisory panel members do not receive a fee for their services.

Konde and Varenne built the platform with talented, unestablished artists in mind.

Most of the works available on Collectionair come directly from the artists' studios whilst some are consigned by private collectors. Users can buy, rent and even swap from what the website ''our art sharing community.''

Varenne and Konde explain that there is ''a commercial agreement subsequently put in place between the gallery or dealer and Collectionair, we are not a gallery and we are not trying to bypass galleries.''
