Horus was an ancient Egyptian sky god whose eyes were believed to be the sun and moon. So the ancient myth goes, Horus lost his eye after a battle with Set. Thoth restored the left eye, and it was believed that the waxing and waning of the moon was the eye being torn out of the sky before being restored again at the end of the lunar month.
