Born in London, Kernoff moved to Dublin where he pursued his artistic career. As well as his portraiture, Kernoff is known for his paintings of Irelands glorious landscape.

In 1930, Kernoff visited the Soviet Union where he was influenced by the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia, evident in his portraiture and the way in which he captures anguish on his subjects faces.

Although Kernoff was unappreciated during his lifetime, in recent his works have fetched nearly £120 000 at auction. In Davy's Parlour Snug: Self Portrait sold at Sotheby's in 2001 against an estimate of  £40 000 – 60 000. Search realised prices for Harry Kernoff here.

Publican Davy Bryne was a close friend of Kernoff, with many of the artist's works and woodcuts depicting Bryne's pub.
