17th March: Silver & Porcelain

Johann Gottlieb Kirchner worked, together with his brother Johann Christian, from 1727-37 at the Meissen porcelain factory. Animal sculptures, such as this Rose-necked Parakeet were his specialities. The Augustus Rex-mark (AR) on the bottom points to Augustus the Strong, who was not only Elector of Saxony, but also King of Poland, the predecessor of the swords-mark.

19th March: Books

Mark Catesby (1693-1749) an English naturalist, from 1731-43 he published his work Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, which is the first description of North America’s flora and fauna. It featured 220 lithographs.

19th March: Autographs

From the 4th to the 12th century, the parchment was the paper of choice when it came to important writings. It was forced out by the Chinese invention of paper which passed through the Arab world to the West to become the stationery of choice.

19th March: Photography

Born in Hamburg, Karl Lagerfeld is now one of the most recognisable faces in the fashion world. As well as his work as a fashion designer, predominately for Chanel and his own label, he is know the world over for his photography.

21st March: Jewellery

Gems have long enchanted people for centuries - most likely since the Bronze Age. They are believed by some to have magical powers, such as the Hope Diamond, which is said be cursed. The diamond was blamed by many for the death of one of its owners, Louis XVI of France.

22nd March: Old Master Prints

Caspar David Friedrich is the most important artist of German Romanticism. His lonesome figures, set in mystical landscapes, symbolise the "tortured soul," one of the main motifs of the movement.

22nd March: 19th Century Paintings

Camille Corot was the leading French landscape painter of his time. As a member of the "Barbizon School," he left his studio to paint in nature. His work had a great influence on the development of Impressionism.
