One of the most wondrous pieces in the sale is a Roman marble torso, depicting an Aphrodite of the Tauride type, from the 1st-2nd century A.C. The piece has been based on a Hellenistic model from the 4th-3rd century B.C. Works from this Roman period would often be featured on pieces such as those by sculptor Praxitele, 4th century B.C.

The elegant piece has been made out of white marble with a grey vein running through the material. The goddess has been depicted coming out of water with grace and sensuality. There is a great sense of realism to this piece, which is life-size and finished to a human scale.

The piece comes from the collection of the famed Paris art dealers Bernheim-Jeune. Isabelle Bresset, Artcurial's Director of Furniture and Works of Art, commented on the ''outstanding piece,'' explaining ''her shapes are remarkably, precisely and sensually rendered. This is a museum piece that symbolises the idealised feminine beauty. Life size, it can compare to the most famous examples known.''

All pieces featured in the gallery above will also be featured in Artcurial's auction on 16th May, 2017. Viewings will take place on 12th, 13th and 15th with viewings by appointment on the morning of the sale. Check out the full catalogue here.
