The intimate portrait, which portrays Freud's pregnant lover Bernadine Coverley, is estimated to sell for £7 million -10 million. The 17-year-old Coverley was pregnant with the couple's daughter Bella Freud.

Oliver Barker, Sotheby's Senior Specialist, said of the work: "This astonishingly beautiful painting embodies the profound bond between Lucian and the mother of his two daughters. There is arguably no other portrait by Freud that is more gripping, more tender, and more laden with such emotional depth."

The piece was painted in 1960-61 when Freud's work moved from his realist style of the 1950s. Bella Freud said of the work: "It must have been a very happy time in her life, being pregnant with the man she loved and him wanting her to be there and paint her."

"I think he was undoubtedly the love of her life."

The work will be sold at Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening sale, London, on 10th February, 2016.
