Gutiérrez Solana, was an Expressionist who was also influenced by El Greco, Goya and Eugenio Lucas Velázquez. During the early 1900's, Solana was an important figure in Madrid's art scene, inspired by his visits to Museo del Prado and Madrid's stunning parks.

He was a regular at Nuevo Café Levante where he would meet with other artististic intellects such as painter and writer Ricardo Baroja and Basque artist Ignacio Zuloaga.

The second artist hitting the market this week at Ansorena is Cuban artist Wifredo Lam. Lam is renowned for his Afro-Cuban works, inspired by his mixed-race heritage, his father was a Chinese immigrant and his mother was born to a Congolese former slave mother and a Cuban mulatto father.

In 1923, Lam moved to Madrid to study under the curator of the Museo del Prado and Salvador Dalí's teacher Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor y Zaragoza.

In 1938, Lam travelled to Paris, where Picasso introduced him to Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque and Joan Miró. Lam was particularly influenced by Matisse and Surrealist artists.
