At the start of the First World War, Nevinson medically treated French soldiers whilst serving in the Friends' Ambulance Unit. His experience with the wounded had a prolific effect on him, using his experience as subject matter whilst painting under a style influenced by Futurism and Cubism.

In 1917, Nevinson was appointed an official war artist, a position he would go on to hold with much controversy. By this time, his style had changed from Modernist to more realistic.

His work Paths of Glory, depicted two fallen British soldiers, in a realistic and indeed shocking manner, in field of mud covered in barbed wire. Nevinson was told this piece would not be shown at the war exhibition he had been commissioned to produce work for. However, in a bid to show the home nation what was happening to soldiers across Europe, Nevinson displayed it with a sign across it which read 'Censored.'

Later that year, despite some disputes, Nevinson set to work on the Hall of Remembrance, commissioned by the British War Memorials Committee. In another blow to his oeuvre, the large scale artwork was never built.

In the same turbulent year, Nevinson created The Road from Arras to Bapaume, a haunting depiction of the Northern-French road. The work was first exhibited Leicester Galleries, London, March 1918.

The rolling hills in the work evoke a sense of English pastoralism, whilst the single road seen from the viewpoint of the Arras depot, heading towards the front is a shocking reminder of the horrors of war. The tree stumps and barbed wire capture the devastation war leaves in its path.

The work, alongside pieces by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Rene Magritte, Georges Braque, Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Patrick Caulfield, Richard Hamilton, Damien Hirst and Bridget Riley will all be featured in Forum's Fine Editions and Works on Paper sale on 5th December.
